Xeomin

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is an injectable wrinkle relaxer that is classified as a neuromodulator. Back in the 1950s, scientists discovered that if a tiny amount of botulinum type A was injected into a muscle, it would temporarily stop that muscle from contracting.

How does Xeomin erase wrinkles?

Xeomin works by blocking acetylcholine, the nerve messengers in muscles. When a wrinkle relaxer is injected into a muscle, nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain are blocked. The brain never receives the message to contract the muscle, so the muscle stays relaxed.

This matters for wrinkles because certain wrinkles, known as dynamic wrinkles, form due to muscle contractions from various expressions like frowning or showing surprise. Over time we make hundreds of thousands of those expressions. So as we age and our skin thins, wrinkles begin to form on the surface skin above those muscle contractions.

When Xeomin is injected into the muscles that contract and create your crow’s feet, it blocks the nerve messages so the muscle stays relaxed. This erases or dramatically reduces crow’s feet on the surface skin. Xeomin keeps the muscles relaxed for around four months.

Who is an ideal candidate for Xeomin?

It depends on if the wrinkles you’re trying to erase are dynamic wrinkles. If you want to address crow’s feet, the lines between your eyebrows, or forehead lines, then receiving Xeomin in Springfield, MO is the answer for you.

However, if you want to do something about those creases and wrinkles on the lower half of your face — smile lines, marionette lines, parentheses lines, barcode lines, and the like — then an injectable wrinkle relaxer may not be the best fit. Those “static” wrinkles form due to sun damage, declining collagen production, personal habits such as smoking, and other factors. Static wrinkles show themselves at all times.

Static wrinkles are the domain of dermal fillers such as Juvéderm. When injected beneath a crease,  Juvéderm will instantly add volume, fill the space, and push the surface skin back upwards. This fills the crease or wrinkle.

What types of wrinkles is Xeomin used on?

As mentioned above, Xeomin only work on dynamic wrinkles on the upper third of the face. It is great for erasing:

  • Crow’s feet along the outside of the eyes
  • Forehead lines and creases
  • Frown lines that form between the eyebrows

What happens during a Xeomin session?

The procedure for injectable wrinkle relaxers is often referred to as a“lunchtime procedure” because it takes just 10-15 minutes so the patient can go right back to work afterwards. The only immediate post-treatment requirement is not to rub the injection sites for 24 hours afterward. This can cause the injectable to migrate to an unintended muscle and create issues such as a drooping eyelid.

Are Xeomin injections painful?

Wrinkle relaxers are injected with a small needle, and not to great depth. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick.

What are the risks involved with Xeomin?

The typical side effects after a Xeomin session are slight redness and possible minimal swelling at the injection sites. Some patients can develop a slight headache for a few hours. All of these issues typically resolve within a day or so.

How long will Xeomin erase my wrinkles on the upper third of the face?

Wrinkle relaxers don’t work immediately; they will from 3-4 days to fully block the nerve messages and relax the treated muscles. From there, most patients enjoy results for about four months. This can vary somewhat depending upon the patient’s metabolism. Once the body absorbs Xeomin, the muscles will start contracting again and the wrinkles will return. Coming back for another wrinkle relaxer session at Affirm will maintain your results.
