All About Acids

What are Acids?

Acids are a typical ingredient in skincare, mostly for exfoliation services. Different types of acids can be used to treat many different skin concerns. There are acids used for hyperpigmentation, acne, dryness, and so much more.

AHAs vs. BHAs:

Acids fall under two categories: AHAs or BHAs. The main difference is that AHAs are water soluble while BHAs are oil soluble. This means that AHAS do not dissolve skin oils, but instead work to reduce fine lines and improve the skin’s texture. BHAs penetrate below the surface to unclog pores.

Lactic Acid:

This is a more gentle acid. It is known to keep the skin hydrated while exfoliating and speeding up the cell turnover rate. It is safe for all skin types and is commonly used to reduce acne scarring.

Ascorbic Acid:

This is the purest form of Vitamin C. It is anti-inflammatory, prevents UV damage, and brightens skin tone. It is safe for all skin types.

Glycolic Acid:

This exfoliating acid works to reduce fine lines, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone. Glycolic Acid is a commonly found active ingredient in skincare products at different levels of potency. It is safe for all skin types and is commonly used for aging skin.

Salicylic Acid:

Another type of exfoliating acid, commonly used to clear pores, treat breakouts, and build up elastin and collagen. Salicylic Acid is a commonly found active ingredient in skincare products at different levels of potency. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Salicylic acid is best for oily and acne-prone skin.

Hyaluronic Acid:

This popular ingredient is known for helping keep moisture from leaving the skin. It is hydrating, plumping, and can soften wrinkles. It is safe for all skin types, but is commonly used for dry skin.

Citric Acid:

Citric acid is used to speed up cell renewal and balance the skin’s pH. It is commonly used to help with hyperpigmentation and dark spots. It should not be used on sensitive skin.

Ferulic Acid:

This is an acid that works well with retinols. It helps prevent sun damage and is known to fight free radicals. It is safe to use with all skin types.
